Prescriptions at Newbridge Surgery

You can order an NHS repeat prescription from your pharmacy by using our online system.

Find out how to get a repeat prescription online, how much prescriptions cost and how your local pharmacist can help you without having to see your GP.

How to order a repeat prescription

You can get a prescription online. Use our online system to order a repeat prescription. You will need to choose a pharmacy to prepare your prescription and collect your medication from.

You will also need:

  • An online account
  • The name of the medication and dosage
  • To be at least 17-years old.

You can now get your contraceptive pill through your local pharmacy first.

Most patients can now get their contraceptive pill directly from a local pharmacy — without needing a GP appointment.

Local pharmacies offer a free NHS service where trained pharmacists can:-

  • Start the contraceptive pill
  • Continue or restart your existing pill
  • Provide ongoing supplies
  • Offer contraception advice in a private consultation
  • You will receive the same checks and reviews that your GP Surgery would carry out

In many cases, this is quicker and easier than booking a GP appointment.

Why use the pharmacy first?

  • Faster access — often same day
  • No need for a GP appointment or prescription
  • Private and confidential consultation
  • Free on the NHS
  • Helps keep GP appointments available for patients with more complex medical needs

How to get your pill

  • Contact a participating local pharmacy or walk in
  • Ask for the NHS contraception service
  • The pharmacist will assess you and supply the pill if suitable

When should you contact the GP practice instead?

Please contact us if:

  • The pharmacist advises GP review
  • You have complex medical conditions or medication concerns
  • You want contraception methods other than the pill (e.g. coil, implant, injection)
  • You have new symptoms or side-effects that need medical assessment

Important information

Our reception team may signpost you to a pharmacy first for routine contraceptive pill requests, as this is now the recommended NHS pathway.

Nominating a pharmacy

When you order a repeat prescription online, you will have to nominate a pharmacy to prepare your prescription and for you to pick it up from.

You can nominate a pharmacy by using the NHS App on or logging into theNHS website using a web browser. A high street pharmacy is where you collect your prescriptions in person. If you have chosen an online-only pharmacy, then they will send your prescription in the post.

If you order your prescription online:

  • You will no longer need to collect paper prescriptions from our surgery
  • Your nominated pharmacy will have your prescriptions ready to collect until you change or remove them.

For more information about nominating a pharmacy, visit the Nominating a Pharmacy page on the NHS website.

Unwanted medication and used inhalers

Did you know that any unwanted medication or used inhalers should be disposed of safely by your pharmacy, not put in the bin, toilet or sink or recycling at home? Please return any unwanted medication or used inhalers to the pharmacy – this protects the environment and stops medicines ending up in our water supplies.
